We use visual literacy everyday. It means being able to understand what a picture means. One type of visual literacy are the signs that we see and interpret everyday.

Visual literacy also means being able to get meaning from an image. Magazines, book covers, and advertisements use images to summarize the information found in them.

Another form of visual literacy is being able to understand a map. A map uses pictures and symbols to show you where things are located.
It is important that our students are able to read the images around them. Whether they are reading a map to help them get somewhere, driving a car, crossing the street, or choosing a book that they want to read. It is a skill that they will use every day.
